Bombus Bumble Bee This species is yellow and black and covered with hairs. Nests underground in abandoned rodent burrows, mulch or under logs.
Specius Speciousus Cicada Killer It is 40 mm long and black in color with pale yellow markings on the last three abdominal segments. It’s a solitary wasp. These insects occur in all states east of the Rocky Mountains and prefer to dig their burrows in sandy, bare, well drained soil exposed to full sunlight.
Apis Mellifera Honey Bee Lives in colonies from 20,000 to 80,000 bees. This species is essential for flower pollination. Most colonies are in hives that are managed by bee keepers, but they may become established in walls or eaves of homes.
Sphecidae Mud Dauber Wasp A black wasp with a long thin waist that is not social or aggressive towards people. Constructs brood chambers on the side of buildings and under eaves.
Polistes Paper Wasp This wasp has yellow with brown markings or black with red or yellow markings. These wasps are aggressive and readily sting people. Usually contruct paper like combs under eaves of homes.
Vespula Yellow jacket This species is 12 mm long and has alternating yellow and black markings on the abdomen. The wasp is very aggressive in defending itself and its nest. Usually contruct paper like comb nests under and above ground.
